Wow, so much has happened in the past week! We wer Wow, so much has happened in the past week! We were thrilled to have sailors from @HMS Raleigh back in the woods lending a hand. A huge thank you to them for their invaluable help—it’s greatly appreciated!

Our second coppice season is now in full swing, with volunteers hard at work restoring the old hazel coupes back into rotation. This effort will yield a variety of handcrafted products, including charcoal, walking sticks, hurdles, hanging pegs, and more.

We’re in the woods every week working on something, so if you’re interested in spending some time outdoors and getting involved, we’d love to have you join us. Feel free to get in touch anytime!

We started coppicing our first coupe last winter, successfully producing beanpoles, fence posts and charcoal. We have cleared our second coupe ready for this year’s coppice and are running a training day for anyone who wants to learn the techniques or refresh their knowledge from last year.
Coppicing is a traditional woodland management method that improves the ecology of the woods by creating a range of ages of tree with the different ecosystem niches that brings.
We are keen to produce useful, sustainable products locally and can discuss orders with anyone who has a garden/home/allotment project in mind.
Some fitness is needed as we will be working on steep and slippery terrain. Tools, refreshments and Cornish Pod pasties will be provided.
Work will then continue every Saturday throughout the winter and all volunteers are welcome to dip in and out of these sessions as they wish. The skills and volunteering opportunities are also ideal for young people doing Duke of Edinburgh awards.
Thank you very much to the @cornwallcommunityfound Thank you very much to the @cornwallcommunityfoundation for their generous funding. With their support, we’ll be able to host volunteer days, bringing together teams of like-minded people to make a positive impact. Volunteering in the woods is a great way to stay active, meet new people and contribute to the community. Come join us and give it a try!
This week we were happy to host tutors and student This week we were happy to host tutors and students from @transferableskillstraining learning how to use various tools by clearing paths, digging the steps in and spreading gravel to make it less muddy, helping us to improve access
We hope you had a nice day out in the woods and look forward to working with you again.

Hello everyone we will be holding an Introduction Hello everyone we will be holding an Introduction to Coppicing day on Saturday November 9th 10am- 2ish. This will be a chance for anyone who wants to learn about coppicing and help us to coppice our second hazel coupe this year. We will talk a little bit about our coppicing project teach you some of the basic skills. This is for anyone completely new to coppicing who want to join us as volunteers this season, or those who helped out last year and would like a refresher.

We will then be properly starting with coppicing and processing on the Saturdays following this induction day: November 16th and 28th.

We will be starting Saturday volunteering on 19th October; making the coupe accessible, clearing paths through the vegetation and removing any pheasant berry, rhodie and larch that are in the area.

It's been great to see last years coupe come to life over the spring and summer, have a walk down and see the new hazel growth. Also, with the recent track improvements there should be a lot less mud this year!

Message if you are interested and we will keep you updated, reminders will go out nearer the time as well.

Ladybirds, also known as ladybugs, play a crucial Ladybirds, also known as ladybugs, play a crucial role in natural pest control by preying on harmful insects like aphids. These beneficial predators help maintain the balance in ecosystems, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. For example, a single ladybird can consume up to 5,000 aphids in its lifetime, making them efficient allies for gardeners and farmers alike. Embracing these eco-friendly garden friends not only promotes a healthier environment but also supports sustainable practices.
